If there was ever a shoe that earns the description of “luxe practicality,” it would be the loafer. Before blazing trails throughout modern-day street style, loafers were regarded as formalwear shoes worn preliminary by those working in Corporate America; and for good reason. Their streamlined silhouette and rigid structure style nicely alongside tailored suits and sharp shirt/trouser combos. And while this still holds true today, we’re seeing more being juxtaposed against wide-leg jeans, flowy maxi skirts, and even track pants–they really do go with everything.

Although names like Prada, Gucci, Bally, and Manolo Blahnik snag the most attention when people think of loafers, their impact is clearly felt beyond the fashion week runways. At Paris Fashion Week, for instance, an assortment of chunky loafers, classic penny loafers, and chain link loafers made appearances in a range of ensembles. Some kept it classy in sticking close to its formalwear core, teaming it with blazers and skirts, while others colored outside the lines, opting to go full-on eclectic.
